Aiming to address the healthcare needs of the Wesleyan University-Philippines community specifically its faculty and staff in Aurora and its stakeholders: the students and their families, the tricycle drivers and the barangay citizens, WUP Cushman Campus through the initiatives of Dr. Carissa Balaria, Dean of the College of Nursing (CON), and Kay Ann Tongol, Dean of College of Allied Medical Sciences (CAMS) spearheaded a medical mission held in WUP Aurora last March 21 to 22, 2024.
The medical mission was conducted in collaboration with the Maria Aurora Rural Health Unit (RHU). It utilized a medical bus provided by University President Irineo Alvaro, in partnership with Senator Riza Hontiveros under the Bridges of Benevolent Foundation Inc. The medical bus was equipped with CT scan, X-ray, ultrasound, and blood chemistry services. The event provided comprehensive healthcare screenings, consultations, and diagnostic tests, ensuring all 264 participants received personalized care and attention.
The success of the medical mission was made possible through the support of various individuals and organizations like the endorsement of Mayor Ariel Bitong of Maria Aurora, an esteemed alumnus of WUP Aurora, who graced the event with his presence. President Alvaro and VP for Administration Gladys Mangiduyos actively participated in the mission, underscoring the university’s commitment to strengthening community linkages and service. Mr. Enix Salvador, Executive Assistant to President Alvaro, and Head of Aurora – Pastor Hilario Gonzales played a pivotal role in coordinating the logistics and arrangements for the two-day mission, ensuring its smooth execution.
CON Faculty members including Prof. Judiliza Velayo, Prof. Archito Dela Cruz, and Prof. Eduardo Dela Cruz, along with eight senior BSN students, also contributed their expertise to the mission. Additionally, Prof. Jay Montiadora from the CAMS coordinated with students from radiologic technology, medical technology, and pharmacy departments, resulting in a team of 40 individuals.
Overall, the medical mission was a testament to the university’s dedication to public service and community outreach. Through collaborative efforts and unwavering commitment, the mission successfully provided essential healthcare services to the local community and established employee health records for WUP Aurora. Moving forward, the university remains steadfast in its mission to promote health and wellness, embodying the spirit of compassion and service to others.
