First Defenders Rising Seminar held @ WU-P

Wesleyan University-Philippines Supreme Student Council conducted the first Defenders Rising seminar on November 23, 2018 at WU-P gymnasium. With the theme “Transforming Youth Leaders to Human Rights Defenders”, the seminar was held to commemorate the 2009 Maguindanao Massacre.

Attendees were Wesleyan student leaders who were called to know and fight for their rights and therefore challenged to become human rights advocates.

Topics were “State of Human Rights in the Philippines”, “Justice System under the Duterte Administration”, “Becoming Human Rights Defenders”, and “Youth Empowerment”. According to the Chairperson of Youth for Human Rights and Democracy Mr. Christian Gultia, “Human Rights are inherent to all human beings even criminals”. He cited that youths, especially student leaders, should always see that their rights as individuals are not being violated.

Amnesty International Philippines Youth Representative to the Board Ray Andrew Villafuerte, Human Rights and Democracy Secretary-General Mr. Patrick Pineda, National Union of Peoples Lawyer Secretary-General Mr. Ephraim Cortez, and Sinag Youth National Chairperson Mr. Armani Migs Narca were also among the speakers in the seminar.
