October 10, 2017

The annual University sports competition ‘Palarong Wesleyan’ began last October 10 with eight teams battling for supremacy -- the Eagles of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Dragons of the College of Business and Accountancy, the Stallions of the College of Criminal Justice Education, the Tiger Sharks of the College of Engineering and Computer Technology, the Dauntless Wolves of the College of Education and Social Work, the Phoenix of the College of Hotel and Tourism Management, the Lions of the College of Nursing and Allied Medical Services and the Circuit Riders of the Wesley Divinity School.

In her remaks before declaring the sports intramurals officially open, Vice President for Academic Affairs Leonita Garcia challenged everybody to turn the friendly competition into an avenue to develop their skills, be acquainted with each other and exemplify Christian virtues.

“I believe this is the core of my challenge to everybody…this is sportsmanship. Sportsmanship is the ability to accept defeat gracefully. The only way to prove that you’re a good sport is to lose… On the other hand, if you emerge as champions… you must learn and develop the virtue of humility.”

Garcia hoped that the one-week event would be smooth saying, “All athletes are disciplined, sana nga, and we expect and pray [for it] so that Palarong Wesleyan 2017 will be peaceful, successful, and everybody will have fun to the max.”

Student Affairs Director Efraim Vidal, Jr welcomed the athletes saying, “The intrams has come again and everybody seems so excited, no doubt, because we Filipinos are known to be sports-minded people. We give time to sports because we gain a lot from it.”

Meanwhile, Supreme Student Council President James Carl Alamani invited everybody, including the academic officials, to perform a dance number to symbolize the Wesleyan spirit of unity. ###
