Soaring to Heights of Excellence
Our energetic, excellent, competent, and ever handsome President, Hon. Pacifico Aniag; our equally energetic, competent, excellent and ever handsome Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Glenn Paraso; our Vice President (for Academic Affairs), Dr. Estrella Buenaventura, to all the deans, faculty, staff and other employees of Wesleyan University - Philippines, parents and friends of the graduating students, to you graduates... good afternoon. Allow me to say thank you to all of you for this opportunity to serve as your commencement speaker in this commencement exercises.
One of the virtues of this institution is the pursuit of excellence. If the possibility of achieving excellence is perceived to be remote and unachievable, it will not be taken seriously by school administrators, faculty, and students. But if it can be shown that excellence is realizable, its norms and values can be created and imprinted in the educational culture. Now, the theme of this message is: Soaring to heights of excellence demands positive attitudes and faith to God to make it possible that this theme be realized in this school.
Let me inculcate in your consciousness that God made you as a person of excellence. He is calling you to a higher standard so He can take you to places you’ve never dreamed of. You are not weak. You are full of "can do" power. So, you must get in agreement with God. He would allow you to soaring to heights of excellence if you continue abiding in His presence and make it sure you are doing your best at the same time.
You were not created to just get by with average, unrewarding or unfulfilling lives. God created you to leave your mark on this generation. You have seeds of greatness planted within by the Creator. You have gifts and talents that you have not tapped into. There are new levels of your destiny still in front of you. But break out starts in your thinking. As you put these keys into action, making room for increase, expecting shifts of God’s favor, praying bold prayers, and keeping the right perspective, then God will release floods of His goodness that will thrust you beyond barriers of the past into the extraordinary life you were designed to live. I’m not just trying to make you feel good. I’m declaring, this message that will help you break out and break free so you can believe bigger, increase productivity, improve relationships and accomplish your dreams in life. If you’re going to accomplish a dream or overcome an obstacle, you’ve got to start declaring it. That’s how you give life to your faith. I want you to remember some keys in soaring heights to excellence.
1. Believe Bigger is seeing God not only providing but also doing exceedingly, abundantly, above and beyond. Your new attitude should be: “God, I’m ready. I’m taking the limits off of You. I’m enlarging my vision. I may not see a way but I know You have a way. I declare I’m coming into a shift. ”You need to check doors that have been closed to you in the past. Things have shifted. When God breathes in your direction, people change their mind. Closed doors suddenly open. The ‘Nos’ turn into ‘Yeses’. Not now turns into It’s your time. Bottom line: God will not allow any person to keep you from your destiny. They may be bigger, stronger, or more powerful, but God knows how to shift things around and get you to where you’re supposed to be.
Whatever level you are at now, God is about to cross His hands and put you in a position you never could have reached on your own. He will give you what you weren’t in line to receive. Why don’t you start expecting unprecedented favor, believing for God to do something new in your life? I know you can say, like me, that God has been good to you. You’re blessed and healthy and you have a good family and a great job, and that’s all perfect. But I can tell you that you haven’t seen anything yet.
God has shifts in your future that if He showed you now you wouldn’t believe. It’s exceedingly, abundantly, above and beyond. You think you’re hitting on all cylinders, but if you only knew what God has in store. It’s like you’re in second gear. You’re making progress. You’re healthy. You’re moving forward. But God is about to shift you out of second, past third, past fourth, into overdrive. You will see the surpassing greatness of God’s favor. Because you’ve honored God and lived with excellence and integrity, God will take you beyond your training, beyond your education, beyond your income, beyond where anyone in your family has gone before you. This shift will put you to a place where you look back and say, “Wow, God. You have amazed me with Your goodness.”
Pursuing Excellence in whatever achievement 1 Corinthians 15:58 “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding (excelling) in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”
One definition of “Excellence” is “the possession chiefly of good qualities in an unusual degree; surpassing virtue, merit, worth, value”. One definition of the word “excel is “to be outstandingly good or proficient; to do well or better than previous personal achievement.” From a biblical standpoint, what does excellence mean? It means to have in abundance, to increase, to surpass. Biblical excellence is to be your best with what God has given you. Excellence does not mean success. Excellence means being your best. Success, to many, means being better than everyone else. Excellence means being better tomorrow than you were yesterday. Success means exceeding the achievements of other people. Excellence means matching your practice with your potential.” To achieve excellence there must be discipline and tenacity of purpose. We are to pursue excellence in our walk, work, and life.
I. Pursue excellence in your walk
A. 1 Thessalonians 4:1 (NASB) “Finally then, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us instruction as to how you ought to walk and please God (just as you actually do walk), that you excel still more.”
B. God hates mediocrity. God told the Laodicean church that their halfhearted, lukewarm lives disgusted Him. (Revelation 3:15) He expects us to live lives that exalt Him.
C. Colossians 1:10 (NASB) “… walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;”
D. Those who excel in their walk live by Biblical principles, not by emotion, by peer or familial influence and pressure, nor by personal comfort or self-gratification.
G. We must choose to dismantle the unnecessary things in our lives that hinder our pursuit of an excellent walk in Jesus. We must learn to let go of activities, commitments, relationships, and interests that aren’t producing fruit in our lives.
H. 1 Timothy 6:11 “But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, Godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness…”
I. Colossians 3:17 “And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”
2. Pursue Excellence in your work
A. Colossians 3:23-24 “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.”
B. "Excellence is taking every assignment seriously for the glory of God." --Kent Crockett
C. Proverbs 22:29 “Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men.”
D. "Good enough never is." – Debbi Field, founder, Mrs. Fields Cookies
E. 1 Corinthians 15:58 “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding (excelling) in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”
F. The following sign was posted in a farm equipment repair shop:"We do three types of jobs--Cheap, Quick, and Good. You can have any two. A good quick job won't be cheap. A good job cheap won't be quick. A cheap job quick won't be good." (Reader's Digest, February 1994, p.127)
G. 1 Samuel 12:24 “Only fear the Lord, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you.” Now you need to get ready. You are coming into a shift. Because you have been faithful and honored God, I believe and declare, God will put you in a position you could have never gotten to on your own. Doors will open that have never opened before for you. What should have taken you forty years to accomplish God will do in a split second. You’re coming into acceleration. Suddenly, a dream comes to pass. Suddenly, a promise is fulfilled. Suddenly, the negative turns around. You need to get ready for the surpassing greatness of God’s favor! God has given to us His best; can we give Him less than our best? By: Allan B. Chavez]
